Grand Opening of the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition
On June 17, 2019 at 19:00, the opening ceremony of the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition will take place in the Great Hall of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. The concert program will include music by the composer in whose honour the Competition is named; among the soloists, there are laureates and Grand Prix winners at the International Tchaikovsky Competition 2011 and 2015: Daniil Trifonov (piano), winner of a Grammy Award (2018), and Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar (baritone), guest soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre. Valery Gergiev will be at the conductor’s stand of the Mariinsky Orchestra.
Shortly before the opening concert, a traditional flower-laying ceremony will be held at the Tchaikovsky monument in front of the Moscow State Conservatory, in which members of the Organizing Committee and jury members will take part.
The broadcast of the opening ceremony of the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition will be available on tch16.medici.tv, Russia-K TV Channel, on the platform of the All-Russian Virtual Concert Hall and on Культура.рф website.
“We expect a very serious competition, and in this regard, it is especially important who represents the jury. Representative jury will ensure objectivity of the Competition. This year the jury will be absolutely stellar in its composition, and we hope for maximum objectivity. We are interested in this, as well as the entire world community”, said Olga Golodets, co-chair of the Organizing Committee of the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition.

This year the Competition will be held in as much as six music categories in order to enable the best performers on woodwindand brass instruments to show themselves within this legendary competition. This is of tremendous importance for the entire musical world and of tremendous importance for themusical Russia”, said Valery Gergiev, co-chair of the Organizing Committee of the XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition.
The XVI International Tchaikovsky Competition will take place from 17 to 29 June 2019 in Moscow and Saint Petersburg with support from the Government of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. The venues of the Competition will be the Great and Chamber Halls of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory and Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow. The award ceremony and the gala concert of the laureates are to be held at Zaryadye Concert Hall. In Saint Petersburg, the Competition will be held at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, the Mussorgsky Hall at the New Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre (Mariinsky II), the Concert Hall of Valery Gergiev in Repino, the Grand and Chamber Halls of the Saint Petersburg Philharmonia, and in the Academic Glinka Capella. The final gala concert of the laureates will be held at the New Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre (Mariinsky II).
All events of the Competition will be available for viewing online, or for later viewing as records on the world’s largest classical music channel, medici.tv. The tch16.medici.tv platform will broadcast competitive performances in all six categories, backstage reports, archive footage and other exclusive videos 24 hours a day every day of the Competition. For the first time this year, an online audience voting will be held, which will allow music lovers all over the world to support the participant they like. The voting will be open during the final round of the Competition.
