By decision of the Jury members, those were 45 participants from 19 countries: Russia, Belgium, Hungary, Venezuela, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, China, Colombia, Mongolia, Portugal, the Republic of Korea, the USA, Uzbekistan, Finland, France, the Czech Republic and Japan. Gala concerts of the Competitionwinners will be held at the Zaryadye Concert Hall in Moscow (June 28, 2019 at 19:00) and at the New Stage of the Mariinsky Theatre (Mariinsky II) in St. Petersburg (June 29, 2019 at 21:00), where the Grand Prix winner will be announced.

This year’s novelty was the two new nominations introduced by the Organizing Committee: Woodwind Instruments and Brass Instruments. This was done in order to develop the world school of winds and brass performance. Thus, the musicians competed in six categories for the first time. Musicians’ interest towards the Competition is traditionally growing. In 2015, 630 applications were received, and this year’s yield grew by one and a half, with 954 applications from 58 countries. 231 musicians made it to the First Round of the Competition. They were evaluated by 70 Jury members.

The broadcast of the events of the XVI Competition on the largest classical music channel medici.tv on June 27, 2019 gathered a record number of views: more than 15.4 million in 190 countries and 11,800 cities. For comparison, in 2015, the number of views amounted to almost 10 million. For the first time ever, the XVI Competition had fan zones where Competition Rounds were broadcast, and lectures and exhibitions were held. In Moscow, fan zones are located in the Russian National Music Museum and inPyotr Tchaikovsky and Moscow Museum. In St. Petersburg, fan zones are located in the Academic Glinka Capella. Also for the first time, the events of the Competition were broadcast by the representative offices of Rossotrudnichestvo, the Russisches Haus des Wissenschaft und Kultur in Berlin  and  the  Centre  de  Russie  pour  la  science  et  la  culture  à  Paris, and on  screens of  500 philharmonic societies and houses of culture within the framework of the All-Russian Virtual Concert Hall project.
